Ice Spice to make acting debut opposite Denzel Washington in Spike Lee’s High and Low remake

Ice Spice is starting her acting career with a bang.

Entertainment Weekly can confirm that the “Think U the S--- (Fart)” rapper will make her big-screen debut in a cameo role alongside Denzel Washington in the Spike Lee-helmed remake of Akira Kurosawa’s classic crime drama High and Low. Variety was first to report the casting.

The film marks Lee and Washington's fifth collaboration. They previously made Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man together. To commemorate the beginning of filming, Apple Original Films, which is co-producing the project alongside A24, tweeted a picture of the duo holding up five fingers each. “No. 5 now in production,” the post reads.

Many of Lee’s movies feature debut movie performances from both lead and supporting actors — Do the Right Thing was Rosie Perez’s film debut, Jungle Fever was Halle Berry’s first movie, Clockers was Mekhi Phifer’s first film, Crooklyn featured the first movie performances from RuPaul and many of its child actors, and He Got Game was the first for NBA player Ray Allen. Lee also cast Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Rosario Dawson, and numerous other now-prominent actors in some of their earliest screen roles.

The original High and Low follows a tense hostage negotiation and subsequent investigation that touches on class dynamics and economic inequality.

Ice Spice is set to perform at both weekends of Coachella this month, and has several other festival appearances slated for summer. Her debut album Y2K is expected to release later this year.
